Some people think that getting old is entirely bad, while others believe that older people can live a better life than those in the past. Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Ageing problem has perplexed us for years recently. For many people, getting old is supposed to be baneful, while for others, it is more of a blessing than a curse. We need to take into account both its drawbacks and benefits.
To start with, elderly people are more likely to have age-related diseases, diabetes and heart disease, to name but two. These diseases may grow with ageing, deteriorated by changes in personal habits and pollution problems. In such case, old people are suffering rather than enjoying life, not to mention the high costs of medical care. The collateral problem along with increase in diseases is that it brings more burdens to their offspring, who have to share the responsibility of taking care of their sick parents. Nevertheless, this is only a special case rather than a general rule.
On the other hand, elderly people are actually growing healthier, happier and more independent. Thanks to the development in medicine and nutrition, the so-called age-related diseases are affecting fewer people and when they do, it is much later in their life. Moreover, old people nowadays are better educated than in those in the past, and they know how to enjoy their retired life by doing more reading, working-out and travelling. In some cases, they are even happy to take good care of their grandchildren and enjoy the reunion with their family. They can have fun and take care of themselves quite well. Thirdly, they are more independent both economically and mentally. They can choose to their own way of life at their will without feeling lonely. They may feel more in control of their lives, a good example for the younger generation to follow.
From my personal perspective, diseases may hurt or even kill old people, but they can not stop them from being strong and self-reliant. The graying generation is definitely staying in the pink, which is beneficial for their personal well-being and the whole society.
